Hi friend , My name is Heather, I'm here to give you the knowledge I have accumulated over fifteen years of hairdressing experience. I'm going to give you the insider secrets on how to get your hair healthy and looking beautiful and keep it that way. Whether you have straight hair, curly hair, damaged hair, colored or permed hair, I have the information you need. First, on this page I am going to give you a little background on the structure of hair. If you are looking for a certain subject, feel free to skip ahead and click on the tab that interests you most. The hair shaft is made up of two major parts. The outermost layer is the cuticle. The cuticle is very thin and made up of tiny overlapping scales that protect the inside part called the cortex. The cortex is where you will find your natural color of your hair, texture, and elasticity(strength). NORMAL HEALTHY CUTICLE DAMAGED CUTICLE FROM PERM Ninety percent of what you do to your hair on a daily basis can be damaging to the cuticle (brushing, combing, shampooing, blow drying, coloring etc). The most important things in keeping healthy hair are moisture, protein, and Ph. Moisture or water is important in every aspect of life. The human body is made up of about 60 percent water. Keeping your hair hydrated is most important for healthy shiny looking hair. Protein is most important for the strength of your hair. Hair is basically made up of a protein called keratin. Ph measures how acidic or basic (alkaline) something is. Ph is measured on a scale of 0-14. Seven being neutral. The natural Ph of healthy hair is 4.5 to 5.5, slightly more acidic than neutral. The most important thing to remember is that acid closes the cuticle, while basic or alkali will open the cuticle. Shampoos tend to be neutral, while conditioner is slightly acidic which will close the cuticle, reflecting more light, making your hair shinier. Now that you have a brief overview of the basics of hair and it's structure, it will be easier to understand how to get healthy beautiful shiny hair for any hair type.
